About us

Anne Whittingham

Having commenced practice as a Landscape Architect in 1981, our Principle, Anne Whittingham, brings a wealth of experience to solving garden design problems.

My Garden Design Advice was founded in 2011 in response to customer requests for an affordable garden design advice service. It is our pleasure to assist others to create gardens and outdoor settings where people can experience and interact with nature.

We are located in the beautiful south east corner of the State of Queensland, Australia and offer assistance with design problems wherever they may be.

Advice is tailored to the needs of property owners, businesses and community groups whose interests lie in the fields of residential, sustainability, commercial, natural environment management, spiritual, recreation, tourism and government project design.

What we really appreciated about this garden design service was that it quickly and easily solved some problems that had been bugging us for years !

We hadn’t been able to work out how to make our garden look the way we wanted it to, but with your advice, suddenly it all seemed so easy. Thank you very much.

We would certainly recommend this service to our friends . . . and our clients certainly appreciate the gardens here too.

We’ve always loved the garden but now we can see that we saved a lot of money by getting some professional help with the design after we retired.

There were things we hadn’t thought about. For example, how to go about the drainage in a cost effective way; how some of our existing plants could be pruned to look better and how we could make some lovely open spaces to  let more light into the garden.

Yes, we saved a lot of money and we gained some new insights into how to add value to our existing assets.

Example Design

As well as beauty in the natural world, sustainability and global consciousness are big issues these days. If you would like special attention to these features as part of your garden design, please let us know.

Anne has worked as part of multi- disciplinary teams on many projects where these issues have been addressed. For example, in 2010 she led the twelve person team who prepared the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Master Plan. The value of this project, which included the conceptual design for a new, international standard Visitor Information Centre, was approximately $20 million.

This design sketch for a new courtyard was prepared from a photograph of an existing house.

The clients were delighted with this simple and cost effective “face lift” to the entry of their country home at Duranbah in northern New South Wales, Australia.

Whether it’s in the country or the city, even the tiniest courtyard can be a place of magic and beauty.

Example Design

Anne designed a unique, outdoor chapel garden that is used for student gatherings at the Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School.

In much the same way as loving attention is given to the construction of Japanese Gardens, Anne worked with earthmoving contractors on the site to personally supervise the placement of a group of carefully selected, columnar basalt boulders in the garden.

These unique hexagonal boulders were formed underground many centuries ago, before being unearthed during construction of the new school buildings.

Under Anne’s supervision, clusters of local native plants were planted in and around this garden by groups of volunteers.
